Self-isolation by Helena Napier
This drawing was started in January 2020 and put to the side for a while. I picked it up again during lockdown, where it slowly emerged as a representation of self-isolation. It took a new direction when I watched a couple I knew sitting two metres apart, when they met to catch up. The blobby figures are separated by something invisible, probably missing one another and feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of distance, just like so many of us now.
At first it seems a bit of a sad drawing, but I see a little comfort in it; to feel a part of you is temporarily missing means that there are things in your life that make you feel whole. When this is over, I hope that feeling of space is filled by happy reunions with friends and family.
